Description

Azafran is a popular breakfast and lunch destination for faculty, guests, and graduate students at Johns Hopkins. Azafran is located in the space telescope science institute (which was responsible for the Hubble Telescope); Azafran is open to the public. Azafran is more a restaurant than a cafe: for lunch, Azafran serves sandwiches, soups, hamburgers on Mondays and Fridays, salads, and panini. In their own unique "earthy" style, they have all sorts of microbrew sodas as well as the more mainstream coca cola products.

My initial impressions were that it was pricey and the service was a little slow. However, Azafran has grown on me. Azafran offers unique sandwiches which are in general better than the average sandwich shop. The soups are so so, but the salads are good; both come with a piece of french bread which is freshly made and more often than not is still hot. The menu changes daily keeping the food interesting. Additionally the somewhat green themed nature of the restaurant (they sell world CDs, nontraditional sodas, book swap) adds charm to the place. JHU students get a discount if they show their alumni discount card. The decor of the eating area is a mix of dining hall and random pieces of art - you bus your own dishes, but they bring your food out to you if you decide to eat there. The main problem I have is that the dining area is poorly lit, which really detracts from the dining experience and makes it preferable to take the food back to work.
