Bub's has been a local favorite with students and other carnivores since I was a student, and apparently enjoys some limited national reputation as well, even with the "damning with faint praise" label "best barbecue in New England" attached by a reviewer some decades ago.
Two things endear Bub's to me: this is the first place I had pulled pork, and the taste of Bub's sauce and tenderness of their meat is now the standard by which I judge others. The sauce doesn't smother the meat, but complements it nicely.
The other thing is Bub's "fixings bar," aka the hot-and-cold bar, which is essentially a short buffet table with baked beans, collard greens, french fries (perfectly salted), potato salad, etc. A plate for the bar comes with every dinner, and for starving undergrads the opportunity to store calories in this way was irresistible; our joke was, "Go to Bub's, you'll save so much on groceries!" ...due to the skipped meals which followed.
Also of note: the free jukebox and the fried twinkie dessert (though yes, instead of just saying, "Parker, your dinner is ready," they will announce, "Parker, your fried twinkie is ready.")
