For a long time Benkei was the open Japanese steakhouse in Tuscaloosa, and while some of the newer Japanese restaurants easily outclass Benkei in terms of service and cleanliness, Benkei wins mainly as a result of its long-standing and unique family recipes for "steak sauce" and "shrimp sauce," as well as its onion soup. The fare is traditional Japanese steakhouse fare, and you can likely get better steak and vegetables at other restaurants - but the sauces and flavors at Benkei are richer and more compelling.
