"CAPTCHA" stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart," but you don't have to worry about that. The point of the scrambled letters and numbers is that you should be able to read them, but a computer shouldn't. This helps us make sure that everyone who has registered to participate in this site is a real person who wants to participate in our community, and not a computer program acting for some unscrupulous marketer hoping to game the system.
It's a drag, yes, but sadly necessary these days.
